Introduction: A Little Bit About Me

Hello again! In case you don't know, my name is Shelby Brown and I am a senior at OU (I plan to graduate in May!). I'm a psychology major and secretary of the Psychology Club, but this semester I'm taking quite a few classes outside of psychology in subjects that interest me (like this one!). So far I've had a great time in this class (Mythology and Folklore). I'm also taking my senior Capstone class, Officiating Spring Sports, an online seminar in cognitive neuropsychology, Women Creating Social Change (another online class), and a half-semester online course called Sociology of Family.

I'm the oldest of five kids. My sister, Tiphanie will be turning 20 this year and has a son, my nephew Preston, who will be turning 1 year old on Sunday! My sister Brittany (almost 15) is a freshman in high school and plays basketball. My brother Gary Brent (I call him Bubba) is 6 years old and my youngest sibling, Maggie, is 5. I currently live with my boyfriend Alex, our friend Michael, and Alex and I have a cat named Sweetie.

I enjoy a variety of activities including reading, writing, and sports. I like to read young adult and fantasy novels. The Harry Potter series is probably my favorite of all; I'm currently re-reading the series for the first time and I just started the Half-Blood Prince. I think everyone likes to find some fantasy world that they wish they could live in and the wizarding world is mine. As mentioned in a previous post, I would really love to go to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter someday. I've played quite a few sports from softball when I was really young to soccer to basketball (from 4th grade to my freshman year of high school) to volleyball to cross country and track.

I am a huge Disney kid, having grown up during the golden age of Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Toy Story, etc. I know tons of Disney songs/movies by heart and quote them at times. During the break I was working my way through all the Disney movies, but now that school has started, I may not have time to finish it (at least not very soon). I also recently became a huge Doctor Who fan over the summer, but I've only had time to watch series 5-7 (the 11th Doctor/Matt Smith series) because of time constraints from school. With little leisure time during the semester, I find it difficult to decide between reading Harry Potter, watching Doctor Who, watching Disney movies, and starting new books, TV series (like Once Upon a Time), and movies.

Well, that's basically me in a nut shell. If you have any questions, feel free to leave a comment and I'll be happy to answer them. I look forward to learning about you guys and reading your stories in the future!

  2. Hi Shelby! I am also a senior and I am excited to be graduating in May. I have read all the Harry Potter books as well. I can remember waiting in line until midnight with my cousin when we were younger to buy the fifth book, The Order of the Phoenix. I hate to admit that although I have read all the books I have only seen bits and pieces of the latest Harry Potter movies! I can remember growing up with Disney too. I vividly remember watching Disney movies when I was little and when I was older always watching the Disney channel after school. I started lots of TV series on Netflix during the break and now that school has started I haven't had time to finish them either. Hopefully we both find time in the near future to finish what we started!

  3. Hi Shelby! I love that you're a psychology major--several of my friends are, as well, and it appears to be a fulfilling major. I've also read the Harry Potter series, several times. This summer I went to the Warner Brothers Studio Tour outside of London. It was wonderful to see behind the scenes. I additionally love almost all things Disney. I think my favorite Disney movies are Mulan and The Lion King. It was nice to meet you!

  4. Oh, that picture of Sweetie in a box is adorable! Have you seen the YouTube video of lions and other BIG cats with their boxes? Cats - boxes - magic! BIG CATS like boxes too! ... and between Harry Potter, Disney, and Doctor Who, I am thinking you will really enjoy this class. Doctor Who is a major obsession of mine: I watched Tom Baker as the Doctor when I was a kid, so it has been thrilling to see the series come back to life. Eccleston is my favorite of the Doctors, but really, I enjoy them all! And Netflix has lots of Doctor to watch, even some classic Doctors too! TOO MUCH FUN! :-)

  5. Your cat is adorable! Kind of reminds me of my boy Dimitri, but Dima only has three legs so he’s kind of weird. I love him though, three legs and all. I totally feel you on the Disney kid vibe! Our childhood had it golden as far as Disney movies are concerned. Harry Potter is another good call that I have to agree on. I could reread those books forever.

  6. I enjoy reading as well! Teenaged romance novels have always been my favorite, especially 13 Little Blue Envelopes. I read quite a bit in high school, but, like you, find little time during the semesters. I’m currently reading the 50 Shades of Grey trilogy. Don’t judge. I really like the Pacific Northwest, which is where the books are set. You write very well, and I look forward to reading your future blog posts.

  7. Hey Shelby! I can't believe we are in this class together! I love your cat! Sweetie is so cute! My boyfriend is wanting me to become a Dr. Who fan at some point in the future. He is a huge fan himself, the only problem is that it is hard to follow a series when you live in different. I can't believe we are going to graduate in the spring! I can't wait to see how this semester turns out!

  8. Shelby, oh my goodness I love your cat! I'm a sucker for cats, and yours is gorgeous.
I think I could re-read the Harry Potter series over and over forever and STILL find new things in the books. I absolutely love that series.
If you find a way to live in the wizarding world, take me with you! :)
I hope you have a great semester!

  9. Hey, Shelby! It’s great to be in class with you. Congratulations on graduating in May – I bet you’re super excited! I can relate to you in a lot of ways – I really like Harry Potter as well as Disney movies, but like you said, as soon as school starts, it’s really hard to come by free time. Anyways, you have a super cute cat and have a great semester!

  10. When I was younger my mom and I tried to read Harry Potter, but we never got very far! I actually watched my first Harry Potter movie all the way through this past weekend. My old roommate and I had never seen one of the movies so my friends made us get a taste of the greatness!

I am a huge Disney fan as well, so I am sure you will enjoy the stories in this class that were developed into Disney movies.

  11. Wow wow wow. Wow this is awesome meow. I can't even read the rest of the introduction because I am just looking at your cat. Wow. My aunt and cousin had a black cat that used to look just like Sweetie. She's a real cutie. I have two cats of my own, as you already know/will find out soon enough. Cats are the bomb.com.

  12. Very cool that you have so many diverse academic interests! It's also good that you're taking advantage of the time you have to pursue those interests so that you do a lot of intellectual exploration. What's your favorite Harry Potter book? Mine personally is the Prisoner of Azkaban: so much gray areas of morality that the characters go through, and so much is revealed about Harry's past!

  13. I plan to graduate in May as well! Congratulations. My fiancé is the oldest of five kids as well so I have been spending a lot of time with his big family. I only have one sister so the family dynamic is definitely a different one! All of my roommates love Harry Potter, but I have actually only seen one of the movies all the way through. They think I am a bit crazy because of it! Haha.

  14. Oh my gosh haha, we are practically the same. (Not in a weird way, obviously...) Harry Potter is definitely my favorite series!! I reread the series during winter break, but I couldn't finish Deathly Hallows. School is kind of a bummer when it comes to doing stuff that you like. But seriously, I laid in bed and watched Disney movies and read Harry Potter the entire break. Not gonna lie, it was awesome! Congrats on graduating soon!!

  15. I am a psychology major as well! I am glad you are taking a lot of classes that you enjoy as well as that cool cognitive neuropsychology class which sounds very interesting! I have a kitty just like Sweetie except really fat, haha! I am such a HUGE Disney fan. When we have snow days, my roommate and I build a fort like children and watch every Disney movie we own and sing the songs on the top of our lungs.

  16. Hi Shelby! I am graduating this May too! Time sure has flown by. I think all your interests are awesome and will always keep you having fun. I was a huge Disney kid as well. Lion King is to this day one of my all time favorite movies. I think it is awesome you come from a big family and it seems that you are close with! This past summer I got to visit the Doctor Exhibit in Wales and it was really cool! (I still haven't watched the show...but it sounds really interesting! haha) Good luck with the remainder of the semester!

  17. I am also a psychology major. I am taking a lot of classes outside my major this semester too. I like being able to explore other subjects and this class has become my favorite. I love your pictures. I also have a black cat. She loves to sleep right next to me and I have become quite fond of her. Well, good luck with your semester. You appear to be extremely busy. I hope that you are able to find time to do the things that you enjoy!

  18. Hi Shelby, it is nice to meet you. Graduation is just around the corner! That is exciting that you are getting to take a few classes outside of psychology. I am also in sports officiating. However, we are opposites in the family part: you are the oldest and I am the youngest. Your cat is so cute. I also love Disney. Good luck after graduation!

  19. Hey Shelby!
It’s very cool that you’re a psychology major. I minored in psychology and I really enjoyed all of the courses that I took. My favorite class I took was motivation. I saw that you also took women creating social change. I took that class as well and I really enjoyed it. I really liked that it was online as well, it made things easier. I’m glad I found another fellow cat lady. They’re just the best.

  20. Hey Shelby!

Congrats on graduating in May and entering the real world. I am a senior as well, but I don't graduate until this December. Wow, you're the oldest of five kids? That's a pretty big family. I bet you all are really close though. I just have one brother who is four years older than me. I enjoyed seeing the pictures of your cats. I am a dog person, but I can definitely appreciate a nice cat from time to time. Best of luck with the rest of the semester!

  21. Hi Shelby! Congratulations on also being in your final semester! It is really crazy to think about how close graduation is now. Psychology seems like it would be such a fascinating major to have. I really enjoyed the few psychology classes that I was able to take at OU. I have always wanted to re-read the Harry Potter series. I have wondered if it is possible for them to be as good as they were the first time that I read them as a kid. Have a great rest of your semester!
